ARTIST STATEMENT

Dance is a vehicle for self-expression, reflection, and connection. Not only does movement communicate ideas and feelings that words cannot, but these thoughts are also better internalized through the process of creating dance. Dance connects people in a special way that is best experienced by immersion within the art form.

Vulnerability is one of my favorite aspects within dance. As a performer, I am drawn to works born from strong emotion, whether negative or positive. Being involved in this kind of process can be cathartic and allow for deeper human connection with all individuals involved.

My creative process is heavily influenced by music. Growing up with a strong passion for both music and dance has ignited my growth in both areas. I typically begin my creative process with improvisation, outwardly expressing the feeling of the music filling my body. I utilize this as a starting point for generating authentic movement and continue to build with a specific intention in mind.

The sense of community built through collaboration with fellow artists is an integral component of my love for dance. The ability to draw inspiration from others’ movement and develop my own has always been an intriguing idea for me. This creates a meaningful bond among humans, knowing that we are constantly moved by one another in such a way that elicits a desire to innovate.
